When Darlene Pahed decided to open a tea room in Kailua, she wanted it to be authentic and interesting. "It's not just tea you're coming in for; it's the experience," she says.

Try the Lady Tiffany's Tea for tea served on fine china, complemented with assorted tea sandwiches, a scone with preserves and dessert. There's even a "Wee Tea" for children under 10, which can be served with lemonade.

Pahed trims the space for various holidays and regularly holds special events. A private room can hold up to 16 people for gatherings, and etiquette classes for children are on the horizon. Two recent evening pajama parties-tea, treats and a movie—sold out. One woman even showed up with bunny slippers on.

A Cup of Tea was named the "New Business of the Year for 2008" by the Kailua Chamber of Commerce. On a recent Sunday, business was booming—nearly every seat was occupied. Reservations are recommended, but walk-oms are welcome.

The tea room is open Tuesdays through Sundays, from 11am to 4:30 pm. Evening accommodations can be arranged for groups of at least 30 people.
